Sustainability & Environmental Policy

How London Construction Contractor Ltd protects the environment, prevents pollution and reduces its impact across design, fit-out, construction and maintenance work in London.

Our commitment

LCC recognises that design, construction, fit-out, refurbishment and maintenance work affect the environment and the people who live and work around our projects. We are committed to protecting the environment, preventing pollution and continually improving our performance, with full legal compliance as a minimum.

Prevent pollution of land, air and water, and minimise dust, noise and nuisance to neighbours.
Reduce waste by following the waste hierarchy: reduce, reuse, recycle and recover, with disposal as the last resort.
Use materials, energy, fuel and water efficiently.
Reduce carbon emissions from our vehicles, plant, offices and sites, and work towards net zero.
Source materials responsibly, including legal and certified timber.
Promote sustainable design through our in-house design team.
Work with subcontractors and suppliers to raise environmental standards across our supply chain.

Objectives and targets

We set environmental objectives each year and track progress against them.

Objective	Target
Reduce waste sent to landfill	Divert at least 90% of construction waste from landfill, measured from waste transfer notes and contractor returns.
Reduce vehicle emissions	Continue moving our fleet to electric vehicles, with all LCC vans and cars ULEZ-compliant.
Measure and reduce carbon	Record fuel and electricity use each year to calculate Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and set a reduction target.
Responsible timber	100% of timber purchased FSC or PEFC certified, or from a verified legal source.
Zero environmental incidents	No environmental prosecutions, pollution incidents or upheld neighbour complaints.
Environmental awareness	All site operatives briefed at induction and through toolbox talks.

Waste and recycling

Materials are ordered accurately to avoid over-ordering, and suppliers are asked to take back packaging and pallets.
Waste is segregated on site where space allows (for example timber, metal, plasterboard, inert and general waste), or sorted and recycled off site by our waste contractors.
Only registered waste carriers and permitted facilities are used. Carrier registrations are checked and waste transfer notes are kept for at least two years.
Hazardous waste such as paints, solvents, oils, fluorescent tubes and asbestos is kept separate and removed by licensed specialists.
Furniture, fittings and equipment removed during strip-out are reused, donated or recycled where possible.
Burning of waste and fly-tipping are strictly prohibited.

Carbon and transport

LCC supports the UK target of net zero by 2050. We measure the fuel and electricity we use as our carbon baseline and report progress each year.

We are moving our fleet to electric and ultra-low emission vehicles, and all vehicles meet London ULEZ standards.
Engine and plant idling is not permitted.
Deliveries are planned and combined to reduce journeys, and local suppliers are used where practicable.
Non-road mobile machinery on London sites meets the London NRMM emission standards where they apply.
We can provide clients with data on materials, waste, energy and transport to help them measure the carbon of their projects.

Materials and design

We specify durable, good-quality and, where possible, recycled or low-carbon materials.
All timber comes from legal and sustainable sources, preferably FSC or PEFC certified.
We prefer suppliers with recognised environmental credentials such as ISO 14001 or BES 6001.
Low-VOC and water-based paints and adhesives are used where possible.
Our design team considers energy efficiency, Part L of the Building Regulations, natural light and ventilation, efficient building services and designing out waste from the earliest stages, and supports clients seeking BREEAM, SKA or similar ratings.

On site: dust, noise and pollution

Our Environmental Site Management Procedure puts this policy into practice on every project, starting with a pre-start review of waste, hazardous materials, drains, neighbours, working hours and any planning conditions.

Dust: on-tool extraction or water suppression for cutting and drilling, vacuum cleaning instead of dry sweeping, and covered skips.
Noise: noisy work only within permitted hours (typically 08:00–18:00 weekdays and 08:00–13:00 Saturdays in London, unless set otherwise), with neighbours and occupiers told in advance.
Water: drains protected, and no concrete, paint, chemicals or wash water allowed into drains.
Fuels and chemicals: stored in bunded containers or on drip trays away from drains, with a spill kit on every site.
Deliveries: planned to avoid peak times, without blocking roads, footpaths or neighbours' access.
Ecology: checks for nesting birds, bats and protected trees before relevant works, with specialist advice where needed.

Subcontractors and suppliers

Subcontractors and suppliers must follow this policy and all environmental legislation on LCC projects.
Environmental performance is considered when we select subcontractors and suppliers.
Subcontractors remove waste through our arrangements or through registered carriers, with waste transfer notes provided to LCC.

Incidents, monitoring and review

Any spill or pollution incident is contained and reported immediately, and serious risks are reported to the Environment Agency. Neighbour complaints are recorded, investigated and answered promptly.

Site Managers check environmental controls during weekly inspections. We keep records of waste, fuel and energy use, incidents, complaints and training, and the Managing Director reviews our performance and this policy at least once a year.
